The Manito Ahbee Festival is gearing up for its 9th year in 2014. The five day event, which brings thousands of First Nations dancers, performers and musicians from across the world together each year in Winnipeg, will take place from September 10-14, 2014. The festival kickoffs with the opening ceremony today, Wednesday September 10th at Oodena Circle at The Forks, followed by a free evening concert called “Oh My Gospel” featuring Aboriginal gospel performers at Holy Trinity Church. Thursday, September 11, will feature the APCMA RBC Ohshkii Awards Showcase, which is an invite only event. Friday, September 12 will host a day long Cultural Education Day at the RBC Winnipeg Convention Centre followed in the evening by the APTN ‘Live’ from the Red Carpet event and then the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards at MTS Centre. Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, also at the MTS Centre, will feature the “Getting Jiggy With It” square dance and jigging competition and two full days of the International Pow Wow and the Indigenous Marketplace and Tradeshow. The Miss Manito Ahbee Youth Ambassador will also be crowned in honour of missing and murdered Aboriginal Women. Tickets for all MTS events can be purchased at Ticketmaster.
